Lidingö city library
New interior in iconic building
Architect Sten Samuelsson’s characteristic town hall for Lidingö was inaugurated in 1974. Now has Lidingö City Library, together with several of the municipality’s operations, moved into the expressive building, which was completely renovated in 2019.
TEA was given the great confidence by the municipality to design all the furnishings for the new city library and the town hall’s common exhibition areas.
The project has included everything from program work, concepts, interior design with many specifically designed, site-adapted furniture and special carpentry. The goal has been a living and inviting culture house for everyone. Great emphasis has been placed on preserving the strong character with, among other things, the orange pillars. Our idea has been to refine the environment with a mild harmonious color scale and to anchor the black details with weight and clarity in bookshelves. An important ambition has been the long-term sustainable and environmentally conscious choices, both in materials and design.
On the entrance level, visitors are met by a quiet environment in the middle of the open hall, with opportunities to read newspapers or magazines in several languages, study at smaller café tables or search the web at free-to-use computers. On this floor you will also find the art gallery as well as larger separate rooms for various program activities and ArtLab, a creative workshop for the younger ones.
The generous information desk is placed below the large staircase, visible from all three entrances. On the lower floor there is a large amount of media, both non-fiction and fiction for children, young people and adults. It also houses several study rooms, many different types of reading places and the very own toddler department, designed as a soft stylized forest glade.
